Abstract

Introduction: perioperative complications of patients undergoing hysterectomy can be prevalent by 52%. The objective of this study is to identify the trans and postoperative complications of the radical hysterectomy procedure performed in women diagnosed with cervical cancer, comparing them with complications in a control group and measuring the associated factors.

Methods: The present case-control study obtained retrospective data from the selected clinical records of the Eugenio Espejo Hospital archive in the city of Quito during the period from January 2010 to January 2012. The calculation of the sample was determined in 60 cases. The Clavien scale was used for perioperative complications. Two groups were analyzed: Radical Hysterctomy (HR) and Simple Hysterectomy (HS) in patients with myomatosis.

Results: 30 cases were included in each study group. In the HR group, 14 (46.7%) with urinary tract infection vs 12 (40%) in the HS group (P = 0.40). In the HR group 12 cases (40%) with surgical wound infection, in the HS 5 group (16.7%) (P = 0.026) with a RR 1.68 (95% CI 1.05 -2.69). Vesical dysfunction, in HR 10 cases (33.3%) versus 0 cases in the HS group (P <0.001) with a RR 2.5 (95% CI 1.78 -3.51).

Conclusions: The most frequent complications of the group that underwent a radical hysterectomy, compared with the one that underwent a simple hysterectomy, were surgical wound infections and bladder dysfunction. The complications in radical hysterectomy in the present study were more frequent in relation to 1: 1.85 and the most prevalent were those in Grade II of the Clavien-Dindo scale.
